The Golden Sun Of Guayaquil: A True Copycat PDF Print E-mail

Specialized artisan production for a specific collector is still extremely common; witness the case of the Ica stones or the sad case of Golden Sun Number 2 in Ecuador. The latter is particularly problematic, not only because is it a fake, but because a lot of Ecuadorians seem incensed that they were taken in and insist that it has to be real. Well, it isn't, and no amount of foot stamping or pouting will change that fact. It is, in fact, a more or less faithful copy of Golden Sun Number 1.

This first golden sun has a well-known provenance. In 1940, on a landholding called Chunucari near the town of Sigsig in the southern highlands of Ecuador, huaqueros uncovered what they called a pelota, a ball, of crumpled gold. They sold the pelota, untouched, to a local man who bought and sold antiquities, and this man sold the ball to Max Konanz, a Cuenca collector. Over the next few months, Konanz and his wife painstakingly unrolled the ball and revealed it to be a large (ca. 44 cm tall) hammered golden sun face in a provincial Huari-Pachacamac style. Konanz exhibited the sun in his private museum for some years and then sold his collection to the new Museo del Banco Central. The golden sun, arguably one of the flashiest pieces of ancient Ecuadorian metalwork known, has become the logo for the museum and for the Banco Central del Ecuador. Somewhere along the line, however, its provenience was changed on its record -from Chunucari to La Tolita, a culture located on the coast up by the border with Colombia. Just why this radical change was made in the provenience without any further information on the piece is not known, although apparently a family quarrel, involving the director of the Museo del Banco Central (a Cuencan too) and the original owners, was part of the problem. There are some extremely good reasons for believing the original provenience and no good ones for believing the changed one, but that is another story and a different battle (Bruhns 1998, 2004). What concerns us here is that along the way, the golden sun gained a twin.

The Venus of Capucuy PDF Print E-mail

The term Venus comes from the Roman deity of love and beauty, and its use has become popular, at the ancient art level, to designate female iconographic representations, both in painting and sculpture. Throughout prehistory, there has being many and diverse human representations, both male or female, many of which have being found in cave paintings, stone and metal materials, particularly on clay, the raw material from which thousands of "figurines" were manufactured during pre-Columbian Ecuador. These representations, primarily female in our country, have been the subject of numerous studies, mainly morphological, lagging far behind gender studies, among which is worth mentioning those of Yepez (2002) and Di Capua (1994).

Symposium Petroglyph of Ecuador PDF Print E-mail

PETROGLYPH SYMPOSIUM OF ECUADOR
October 4-8, 2010

Ernesto Salazar (PUCE) and Josefina Vasquez (USFQ), coordinators

Calling

The cultural inventory conducted by the Coordinating Ministry of Heritage has allowed to register a significant number of sites with petroglyphs, some already known, and most unknown in the archaeological profession. Amateur domain for some time, the archaeological study of petroglyphs has taken another dimension, as new techniques for recovery and preservation of information have developed as well as new methods of correlation and interpreting cultural iconography.

In Ecuador, the systematic study of the petroglyphs has barely begun; therefore it is necessary to obtain an overall view of the immense rock-art in the country, the material conditions in which they are found and the projections its research has.

On this matter, we are calling for colleagues and interested people to a symposium held at the PUCE, from October 4 to 8, 2010. In parallel, the Cultural Centre of the PUCE has planned a photographic exhibition of Ecuador`s petroglyphs, the same will host graphic contributions of participants wishing to contribute to this event.
